Life is always in a state of conflict. Whether it is competing with another lifeform for prescious resources, control over the other, or the simple right to live. War is inevitable. No one knows this better than Samus Aran. Called in for special operations that the Galactic Police are, either unwilling, or unable to do, she has seen more conflict in her short life than most beings with a much longer life span will ever see. But she survives.
You see, that is mankinds greatest assett. Of all the races in all the galaxy humans are
probably the least developed, shortest lived, and an un-extraordinary race. Yet, they still
exist and continue to carry on. But even as far as humans go there is something that
sets Samus, and others like her, apart from the rest of humanity. Perhaps it is there unbreakable will, or there adaptability to new situations that makes these humans the most fearsome of the Space Hunters. Or perhaps it is something deeper, darker, more primal than anyone is willing to admit. One thing, however, is unquestionable. They WILL get the job done by any means necessary.
This "motto", if you will, was what prompted the Galactic Federation to call in Samus Aran when Ridley and his space pirates threatened to unleash war on all the galaxy.
The Federation knew that the space pirates were in posession of a weapon that would cause massive devastation on a galactic scale. Called Metroid by the Federation, these
jellyfish like creatures were ravenous hunters that fed on the life-force of other living creatures. The Federation went to war. However, there own millitary, the Galactic Police, had proved ineffective against the space pirates. So, while the Police kept a large group of the pirates occupied they hired a Space Hunter to infiltrate the planet Zebes and destroy the Space Pirates leaders: The Dragon Ridley and the lizard Kraid. It was during this mission that Samus found that Ridley and Kraid were but puppets of a much more dangerous and malevolent sentience, the Space Pirates Mother Brain. In a guerilla style campaign Samus defeated Ridley, Kraid and the Mother Brain and barely escaped the self destruction of Tourian, the pirates headquarter.
This, however, was not the last the Galactic Federation would hear of the Metroids. A science team on a routine survey mission, stumbled upon SR-388 and found it to be a breeding ground for the Metroids. It was hypothesized that this could have been the home planet of the Metroids and so, once again, the Federation called Samus Aran in.
Her mission this time, genocide. She was to exterminate ALL living Metroids on SR-388.
But when she got below the planets surface, in a vast network of underground caverns, she found that the Metroids she was familiar with were only one stage of the life form. Other Metroids existed that were more intelligent, stronger, and, to her horror, much more dangerous. Once again war raged around her as the Metroids fought for there existance. They turned out to be no match for the resilient Samus Aran, though, as she finally reached the deepest cave and destroyed the Queen Metroid. And, once again, she fled as the planet seemed to collapse around her. This time, on her way out she stumbled onto a cave that contained a single Metroid egg. She watched, fascinated, as it hatched. It moved toward her, and as she prepared to dispatch it, she realized that it was not attacking her. The baby just flew in circles around her, and she realized that it had imprinted HER as its mother. The Metroid followed her to her ship and, unable to leave it to die, she took it with her.
But, as before, this was not to be the end of the Metroid saga. For one KNOWN Metroid had survived. Samus took the baby Metroid to the Ceres space colony research center so that it could be cared for and studied by the scientists. Finally believing it to be over Samus returned to her ship and left. But before she could reach the edge of the asteroid belt she recieved a distress call: Ceres colony was under attack! Returning to Ceres she found the place deserted except for the science team which layed dead in the main laboratory. In a back alcove she found the baby Metroid, still in its stasis field, but when she tried to retrieve it she was stopped by the dragon Ridley. Somehow, Ridley had survived and managed to escape the destruction of Tourian. After a token battle Ridley flew off with the Metroid. Now Samus knew what she had to do. She returned to Zebes to once again face down Ridley, Kraid and the Mother Brain in hopes of saving the baby Metroid.
After a long and grueling battle Samus came face to face with the Mother Brain once again. This time, however it was ready for her. A Metroid much larger than any she had previously encountered swooped in and attacked her. Draining all but the last bit of her life force. With an unmistakable scream, it stopped and hovered in front of her. The baby Metroid! It then attacked the Mother Brain, but to no avail. Finally, before it died it imparted the last of its life force to Samus. Upon which the Mother Brain destroyed the Metroid.
Revived by the last of the Metroids life-force, and enraged at the cruelty of the Mother Brain, Samus renewed her attack with a vengeance that defies description. Her suits monitor and micro-circuits all blinking the same word, HYPER, over and over. The Mother Brain fell to the merciless onslaught of the enraged Samus. But with its death it initiated a planetary self-destruct. Escaping the planet in the nick of time she looked back and watched as the planet exploded in a blinding light that must have been visible from thousands of other worlds. This time, it was over. And now she can rest. Or can she?
Life is always in a state of conflict. But Samus will survive, that is her races legacy.
